Is It Worth Investing Your Own Money to Learn AI?
Many people send me direct messages asking the same question.
They think twice about joining a program to learn. I ignored it at first, until one specific question kept showing up.
"Brian, is it worth investing personal money in AI to boost my work?"
Why do people think this way?
Imagine you own a large farm, but you refuse to buy a tractor. So you plow it yourself using a rusty hoe you inherited. On paper, you are saving money. You spend zero dollars.
But your back hurts. You sweat all day. And the farm that should have been plowed by morning takes an entire week.
Many people are doing the exact same thing with their careers.
They do repetitive tasks manually. It is slow. It is full of retyping. As long as the job gets done, they think it is fine. But they are paying a much higher price using their own time and energy.
I have spent two decades in the product world, from leading teams at Tokopedia, Hijra, and Flip, to building three of my own startups.
Making companies lean is an old habit of mine, long before AI was a trend: over $4 million per year saved from various initiatives. This came from process improvements, operational cost optimization, and more efficient product decisions. Automation was just one part of it, not the sole source.
Back then, that kind of leverage required a position, an engineering team, and expensive systems; now, AI is the sharpest tool for the same habit, and it can be trained to everyone on the team.
Calculating the True Cost of Your Time
Let us do some honest math about your daily routine.
Say you earn a standard mid-level salary of $5,000 a month. You work roughly 160 hours a month. Your time is worth around $31 per hour.
Then on Monday, your manager hands you an important task. For example, you are asked to draft employee KPIs for an entire division. This requires deep research. You have to find the right metrics, align them with annual targets, weigh the scoring, and write a long document.
If you do this manually, you might spend three to four full work days. Let us say you spend 24 productive hours on it. The value of the time you burned on that single task is over $740.
That is just one KPI task. Add the dozens of client emails asking for details. Add checking the monthly transaction data that comes in a messy format. Add the inter-division coordination meetings.
Without realizing it, you throw away hundreds or thousands of dollars of your own time value every month. It feels free because you are not wiring money to a bank account. But you pay with your rest time. You pay with the time you could spend with your family.
Just like the person plowing the farm. The cost of a skill is not the price tag you pay when you sign up. The true cost is how much valuable time you slowly burn every month because you do not have that skill.
Large-Scale Efficiency Facts
To give you an idea of what real efficiency looks like, let us look at my time at Flip.
My team and I cut money transfer costs by 32 percent in just six months. That equaled $2.12 million per year in saved costs. At the same time, we cut customer support costs by 42 percent through ticket automation, jumping capacity from zero to 70 percent.
The pattern was similar at Tokopedia.
When my team and I cleaned up the security systems, we cut OTP costs by roughly $2 million per year. This process even unlocked an additional 1.5 million transactions every month. A wasteful system was turned into a clean one.
These massive numbers happened before generative AI became popular. Back then, it took a team of dozens of engineers. It took months of research, design, and coding to get it stable.
Now? You can execute incredibly complex initiatives in a matter of days.
The power for large-scale efficiency has shifted. From the hands of giant engineering teams, straight into your own hands.
Real ROI from the Field
That is why I am completely relaxed when people hesitate to invest in themselves using personal funds.
In the first batch of AI Circle, the proof was very real. Many alumni reported back.
One person who was previously overwhelmed with work can now finish a week of tasks in two days using AI. Another participant who studied and practiced seriously landed an internship paying over $1,200 a month. Their investment paid for itself multiple times over in the very first month they worked.
I always apply this principle to my own business.
In the past, building consistent educational content required a dedicated team. Today, I built and run an 8-channel content distribution system completely alone. One long video gets automatically cut into short clips. Then it gets distributed automatically to YouTube, LinkedIn, Shorts, Reels, Threads, and WhatsApp. I operate all of this smoothly from my room.
Along with that, I also built an Applied-AI certification system that runs end-to-end.
This is what real leverage looks like. You put in a small effort upfront, but the system keeps working for you. And this powerful tool is already sitting inside your laptop.
The Cheapest Investment
So, back to the original question. Is it worth investing your own money?
The answer goes back to how you view your own time. If you feel your free time has low value, learning will feel expensive. But if you know the price of every productive hour, this investment feels incredibly cheap.
I only have one rule for myself today. Put your investment in the place where ignorance costs the most. And today, not knowing how to use the right tools is very expensive.
You will fall behind. Your routine work will pile up. Your focus will break on trivial things.
What you thought was a waste of money to pay for knowledge is actually the most profitable investment. What you thought was saving money because you refused to spend is actually the path that drains your life energy the most.
Which side are you on? Do you still want to do things manually for hours every day? Or do you want to invest and cut your workload starting now?
If you feel it is time to drop the hoe and start building your own career leverage, you can join and learn with us at AI Circle. We break everything down practically so you can use it daily.
And if you happen to be a leader, you do not need to stress about teaching your team one by one so they can work faster. You can look at my corporate training programs on my corporate page to discuss the right AI solutions for your team.
