Is it safe to put confidential company data into ChatGPT?
Short answer
It depends entirely on the account tier. Free and Plus versions are not safe because your data trains their models. Enterprise or Team plans do not use your data for training. But the golden rule remains: never paste raw client details, financials, or sensitive source code into a prompt without explicit written permission from your company.
I see professionals panic over IT violations all the time because they pasted company data into an AI. That panic is completely justified. If you work at a major company, leaking data through a prompt can end your career.
You have to separate the account types. If you use a free account, anything you type can be used by the provider to make the AI smarter. Never put anything confidential there.
If your company subscribes to the Enterprise or Team tiers, the rules change. The AI provider guarantees they will not touch your data to train their models. The security is high. But remember, just because it is technically safe does not mean it complies with your internal company policies.
