Validate Your Weekend Business Idea with AI

August 19, 2026 · Brian Arfi Faridhi

The intention was to build a business.
The reality was I was busy writing fiction.
I did not realize it at first, until I noticed nobody ever read my documents.

I thought writing a business plan with dozens of pages was a sign I was taking it seriously.
It was actually just a way to delay actually selling things.

How so?

Imagine this. You want to start a small street food stall this weekend.
Instead of cooking, you are busy making a vision and mission presentation for your spouse.
On paper, you feel productive.
You spend zero capital, just the sweat of thinking.

But in reality, you have not sold a single plate.
You feel like you have walked a long distance, yet your feet are still on the starting line.

A lot of people do exactly this when starting a weekend project.
Maybe because my track record is quite long. Two decades building products at Tokopedia, Hijra, and Flip, plus building three startups of my own. People think I have a secret formula.
I often get direct messages asking how to start a small business the right way.
Or they pitch to my discussion partner and colleague, Faridhi, bringing neat documents complete with financial projections.

My answer today has changed drastically compared to five years ago.
Back then, I might have advised you to do months of market research.
Now, I tell you to close your document editor and open an AI tool.

Building lean and efficient companies has been my habit for a long time, long before AI became popular. I drove over USD 4 million in cost savings per year across various companies. Those savings came from process improvements, cost optimization, and more efficient product decisions. Automation was just one part of it.

Back then, getting that kind of leverage required a leadership position, a team of engineers, and expensive systems.
Now, AI is the sharpest tool for that exact same habit, and anyone on your team can be trained to use it.

You can apply this exact same principle of leverage right now.
Including when you want to validate a business idea for your weekend side project.

Stop Guessing the Market

A business plan for a small idea with zero buyers is just a guess in a neat format.
You guess who will buy your product.
You guess what price makes sense.
You guess what features they need.

The problem with a guess is it always looks good in our own heads.
When it meets the real world, the guess often falls apart.

In the past, testing this guess required money and a lot of free time.
You built a prototype, rented a space, and threw it into the market.
Then you waited for the results.

If it failed, your money was gone, your time was wasted, and your energy was drained.
People often call this the cost of learning. But you are actually paying with your own focus and patience.

Now, you have a sparring partner you can instruct to be the harshest buyer in the world.
You can test your ideas without spending money on expensive consultants.

The Practical Way to Test the Waters

Most people misunderstand how to use AI for business.
They use it for passive tasks. They ask for a clothing brand name. They ask for a sales caption.
That is the easiest way to waste the potential of the most powerful tool you have.

The right way is to make it your debate opponent.
You feed it your idea, then ask it to find flaws until your idea looks terrible.

Say you want to start a premium sneaker cleaning service this weekend.
Do not ask AI to write an advertising slogan.
Ask it to act as a demanding and highly skeptical customer.

The prompt I use is usually this simple:
"I am starting a premium sneaker cleaning service. Act as my highly skeptical target market. Give me five brutal reasons why you would refuse to use my service and prefer to wash them yourself or go back to your usual place."

The output usually makes you pause and think twice.
It will ask about the warranty if their limited edition shoes get ruined.
It will ask about the turnaround time conflicting with their schedule.
It will ask why the price is higher than standard cleaning services.

This is the most logical and fast AI business validation process.
You are forced to think of answers for problems that have not even happened in the field yet.
You can fix your business model today without actually ruining someone else's shoes.

Leverage That Used to be Exclusive

Let us go back to efficiency and leverage.
As I mentioned earlier, efficiency has always been my work.
In the past, finding business flaws before launching required long market research and paying people to run it.
The idea was cheap, but the process of proving it was very expensive.

Now, that leverage is right in front of you.
You do not need to be a product director with a massive team to save time on idea validation.
You just need to understand how to ask the machine the right questions.

I prove this myself for my daily operations.
For example, I built an 8 channel content distribution system from scratch by myself.
One long video is automatically cut into short clips, then distributes itself to YouTube, Shorts, Reels, Stories, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and Threads.
It manages its own schedule and sends a report to me every day.

Work that used to require a full content team now runs daily, and I just review and say go.

The tools are different, but the efficiency mindset is identical.
Do not waste capital on things you can make cheap.
And do not waste time testing manually when you can simulate the risks beforehand.

Put the Tool in the Right Place

The biggest problem when starting a weekend project is not a lack of good ideas.
It is that people fall too deeply in love with their own ideas.
They become blind to flaws that are obvious to anyone else.

This is where the value of AI hits hardest for me personally.
It is not just for writing code or generating generic marketing materials.
It is for giving you a reality check before you actually spend capital and burn your weekend.

Just like the street food stall analogy earlier. The faster you know your neighbors prefer a different dish, the faster you can change the menu without having cooked a whole cart of food.
Put this tool at the most crucial stage: when you are weighing if the idea makes sense or not.

What I thought was a waste of money paying for premium AI tools, is actually an investment to save capital.
What I thought was saving money by writing documents myself for days, is actually the most expensive path because it burns time and energy.

Which side are you on?
