How to Build a Professional Side Hustle While Working Full Time

September 2, 2026 · Brian Arfi Faridhi

Many people think the key to a side business is working countless hours a day.
They stay at the office until evening.
Then they manage their side project until early morning.
I used to think that way.
Working endlessly is just a fast track to ruining your health.

My name is Brian Arfi Faridhi. Most people call me Brobri.
I have spent 20 years building products.
My background includes Tokopedia, Hijra, Flip, and three of my own startups.
Now I work full time leading four product teams at a superapp in the MENA region.
We are building a centralized loyalty platform for Saudi Arabia and the GCC.
The stakes are high. The targets are aggressive.

But I am also building a professional side hustle.
I created AI Circle.
I run an Applied-AI Certification program and conduct one-on-one mentoring.
People often ask how I divide my time.
The answer is not sleeping less.
It is about building a realistic workload management system.
You cannot force your body to work endlessly.
You need the right leverage to lift that weight.

Efficiency is an Old Habit

To understand how I work today, you need to see how I worked before.
Making companies lean is an old habit of mine, long before AI became a trend.
On my homepage, I mention saving over USD 4 million per year.
That number is not magic.
It came from various cost-saving initiatives I drove as a product leader.
We improved processes. We optimized costs. We made more efficient product decisions.
Automation was just one small part of it back then.

At Flip, my team and I cut money transfer costs by about 32 percent in six months.
That generated around USD 2.12 million in savings per year.
At Tokopedia, I led an efficiency project that cut OTP costs by USD 2 million a year.
Even at Hijra Bank, I directed five product managers to boost transactions.
Zakat gross transaction value jumped 549 percent from the normal baseline in just two months.
All those achievements required intense execution and focus.

Back then, building that kind of leverage required a strategic position.
It required large engineering teams to execute every idea.
It required expensive systems.
Now AI is the sharpest tool for the exact same habit.
The difference is you can teach this tool to anyone on your team.

Using AI to Work Alone

This is my secret to building a side hustle while working a demanding full-time job.
I do not hire a big team to manage my personal content.
I built an eight-channel content distribution system instead.
I operate it completely alone.

One long video gets automatically cut into smaller clips.
The system then distributes those clips to YouTube, Shorts, Reels, Stories, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and Threads.
It handles the publishing schedule. It sends me daily reports.
Work that used to require an entire department now runs automatically.
I just review it briefly and approve.

I also built an Applied-AI certification system that runs on its own.
From the initial assessment to issuing the final badge, everything is automated.
This allows AI Circle to grow without disrupting my primary job.

I even built a support orchestrator agent using AI named FINA.
I developed the prototype by myself in two weeks.
That system automated up to 70 percent of support tickets at a cost of about USD 0.004 per response.
It even caught a potential security flaw before a major release.
If you know how to use these tools, you can execute enterprise-grade tasks alone.

Managing Your Workload

A lot of advice out there tells you to sleep four hours a night to succeed.
I strongly disagree.
Building a professional side hustle must be sustainable.
If you do not sleep enough, you make bad decisions.
In the professional world, bad decisions are extremely expensive.

As a product leader handling massive transactions, I need a clear head.
Building a loyalty platform in a strictly regulated market requires caution.
When we integrated Tokopedia and Gojek accounts, millions of users felt the impact.
Imagine if my brain was foggy from lack of sleep due to a side project.
Everything could fall apart.

You must set strict boundaries.
Your core working hours belong to your main job.
Only your remaining time goes to your side hustle.
This is exactly why automation systems are so crucial.
The system works while you focus your attention elsewhere.

To maintain these boundaries, I follow three simple rules.
First, cut work that has no impact.
If a machine can do it, let the machine do it.
Second, invest time upfront to build systems.
You will get tired setting up AI and automation initially. But you will save hundreds of hours later.
Third, respect your physical limits.
Great ideas rarely come from an exhausted mind.

When You Should Start

You do not need to wait for free time.
Free time is created, not found.
Your first step is to fix how you work right now.
If your main job is currently a mess, do not add another problem to your plate.
Clean up your processes first.
Build the habit of working efficiently.
Only then should you use AI to scale those habits into new areas.

Building a professional side hustle is not about staying awake the longest.
It is about building the smartest system to manage your energy.
